A high-profile US delegation led by Vice President’s wife Usha Vance and including White House officials will visit a US military base in Greenland this week. The trip has sparked criticism from Greenland’s outgoing Prime Minister, Mute Egede, who calls it a “provocation” amid the island’s growing tensions with the United States over potential annexation.
The delegation, which includes National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright, aims to build on partnerships with Greenland while respecting its self-determination. However, Greenland’s pro-business party, Democrats, has criticized the visit during coalition talks for municipal elections next week.
The US delegation will attend a dogsled race at the Pituffik space base, vital for its ballistic missile warning system. The visit comes as President Donald Trump continues to push for the US to take over Greenland, despite the island’s rich resources and opposition from both Greenland and Denmark.
Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has expressed concerns about the US delegation’s visit, calling it a “serious matter” that should involve Copenhagen and Greenland’s future government in any talks with the US. The visit has raised questions over the fate of Greenland’s autonomy amid growing tensions between the island and its traditional ally.
