US Department Launches Project Firewall to Protect Skilled Workers

The US Department of Labor has launched Project Firewall, a new initiative aimed at protecting highly skilled American workers from exploitation by employers using H-1B visas. This program will ensure that employers prioritize qualified Americans when hiring and hold them accountable for any abuse of the visa process.

According to US Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer, the goal is to safeguard the rights, wages, and job opportunities of highly skilled American workers. The department will conduct investigations into employers suspected of violating H-1B program compliance and take action against those found guilty.

Violations can result in back wages owed to affected workers, civil money penalties, and/or debarment from future use of the H-1B program. The department will also share information with other government agencies to combat discrimination against American workers.

To help employers follow the law, the Wage and Hour Division offers multiple compliance assistance resources, including a toll-free number (1-866-4-US-WAGE) for questions and concerns. Project Firewall is part of the department’s efforts to protect America’s most valuable resource – its skilled workforce.
