US Deploys Record-Breaking Military Presence Near Iran

The US military has significantly increased its presence near Iran since a recent nuclear talks failure on February 17, with over 150 aircraft deployed to European and Middle Eastern bases. This is the largest military buildup in more than two decades, surpassing even before the Iraq war in 2003.

The deployment comes after President Trump threatened to attack Iran unless a deal can be reached on restricting its nuclear program. Experts say the assets assembled are indicative of a prolonged campaign without a ground invasion.

More than half of the newly deployed aircraft landed at European bases, positioning planes out of range of most Iranian missiles. This allows for strategic deployment of materiel or personnel without presenting the Iranians with an easy target.

Major warplanes like F-35 fighter jets and E-3G Sentry early warning aircraft have been spotted in satellite imagery, along with refueling tankers and reconnaissance planes. Both aircraft carriers USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Gerald R. Ford are now sailing near Iran, accompanied by guided missile destroyers carrying Tomahawks.

Experts warn that the massive military presence indicates the US is planning for a sustained or limited campaign, depending on President Trump’s goals. If an extended air campaign is planned, more assets will be needed, according to defense officials and experts like Mark Cancian.
