The State Department has designated Ansarallah, also known as the Houthis, as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO), fulfilling President Trump’s promise to address the threat they pose to American interests. The designation follows recent attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, including U.S. service members.
The Houthis’ actions have caused concern for regional partners and global maritime trade. Notably, they spared Chinese-flagged ships while targeting American and allied vessels. The US will not engage with countries that support terrorist organizations like the Houthis, even if it’s under the guise of legitimate international business.
This designation is part of the Trump Administration’s commitment to protecting national security interests, American lives, and regional stability. Terrorist designations help disrupt terrorist activities by curtailing support. A reward offer of up to $15 million has been announced for information leading to disrupting Ansarallah’s financial mechanisms.
