The US Department of Energy (DOE) has launched a new pilot program to speed up the testing of advanced nuclear reactor designs. The program aims to expedite commercial licensing for next-generation nuclear reactors by providing private funding and streamlining the regulatory process.
The program, authorized by President Trump’s Executive Order, seeks qualified US companies to construct and operate test reactors outside of national laboratories. This move is expected to boost American innovation, create jobs, and secure a reliable energy supply.
Key features of the pilot program include:
* A deadline of July 4, 2026, for at least three reactors to achieve criticality
* Funding will be unlocked through private sources, enabling fast-tracked commercial licensing
* Companies will be responsible for all costs associated with designing, manufacturing, and operating test reactors
Initial applications are due by July 21, 2025, with subsequent submissions allowed on a rolling basis. The DOE will sponsor an Industry Day event on June 25, 2025, to provide more information about the program.
This pilot program represents a significant step towards developing next-generation nuclear technologies and ensuring the US remains a global leader in nuclear energy.
