US Drivers Often Ignore “Slow Down, Move Over” Laws

Most states have laws requiring drivers to slow down or change lanes when passing an emergency vehicle on the side of the road. However, a recent study found that nearly 40% of drivers fail to follow these laws, putting responders at risk.

The American Automobile Association (AAA) Foundation for Traffic Safety analyzed data from over 12,000 drivers in 13 states and discovered that many drivers neglect to slow down even when they do move over. This can be deadly for emergency responders who are trying to work safely on the side of the road.

According to AAA, slowing down and moving over is a crucial safety measure that can save lives. The study’s findings highlight the importance of following these laws and taking necessary precautions when driving near an emergency vehicle with flashing lights.
