US Ends Haiti Deportation Protections Under Trump Administration

The Trump administration has canceled an 18-month extension of deportation protections for Haitian migrants, allowing them to be removed from the country sooner. The decision, announced by DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, reverses a move made by the Biden administration in June last year.

TPS protection was initially set to expire in February 2026 but will now end in August instead. TPS grants protection from deportation and allows work permits for Haitian nationals living in the US. Republicans have criticized the program, saying it has been used too broadly.

Noem stated that President Trump and she are returning TPS to its original status: temporary. The DHS spokesperson cited “abuse and exploitation” of the program and noted that Haiti had been designated for TPS since 2010. Over 520,000 Haitians were eligible for TPS protection in July.

The move follows recent actions by Noem, including revoking a TPS extension for Venezuelan migrants and ending the use of parole to allow migrants into the US. The administration has also paused applications for three other parole programs due to national security concerns.
