The Trump administration has ended funding for U.N. World Food Program emergency programs, cutting off food aid to millions of people in Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, and 11 other impoverished countries. The cuts are described by the WFP as a “death sentence” for many who face extreme hunger and starvation.
Millions of people will lose access to daily bread and basic necessities due to the termination of contracts with the WFP and humanitarian groups. The affected countries include Syria, where $230 million in contracts was canceled, and Yemen, where all U.S. aid to WFP food programs has been stopped.
The decision to cut aid is part of a broader freeze on foreign assistance through USAID and the State Department, which has been criticized for being wasteful and advancing liberal causes. The U.S. had previously provided $4.5 billion of the $9.8 billion in donations to the WFP last year, but the current cuts will significantly reduce this support.
Humanitarian groups warn that the abrupt end of these programs threatens some of the world’s most vulnerable populations, many of which depend on food aid to survive. The WFP chief described the cuts as “undermining global stability.”
