A joint military mission involving 150,000 personnel from European countries led by the US is being discussed as part of post-war reconstruction efforts in Ukraine. The proposal will be a key topic at the upcoming Munich Security Conference, where Vice President Jay D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are set to attend.
Several European countries, including France, Great Britain, and Baltic states, have expressed willingness to contribute troops as part of a peacekeeping contingent. However, Germany has expressed concerns about the timing of such a decision.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that he is open to serious negotiations for security guarantees in exchange for hosting foreign troops on his country’s territory. He has even considered welcoming up to 200,000 troops, but European officials have raised concerns about the logistics of providing such a large number of personnel.
According to Professor Lawrence Freedman, over 100,000 military personnel are needed for regular rotations and exceptional situations. The US is developing a new aid plan that takes into account Europe’s role in supporting Ukraine.
The proposal faces several challenges, including the need for significant US backing to maintain any military presence.
