US Experiences Worst Flu Season in 15 Years

The US is experiencing its worst flu season in 15 years, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC reported that the percentage of doctor’s office visits driven by flu-like symptoms was higher than any winter flu season since 2009-2010.

COVID-19 appears to be on the decline, while another respiratory illness, RSV, has been fading. However, the flu has forced schools to shut down in some states, with over 650 students and staff being out of class for three days. The Godley Independent School District closed due to high flu activity.

This season’s flu season is expected to peak around February. As of last week, CDC estimates reported at least 24 million flu illnesses, 310,000 hospitalizations, and 13,000 deaths.

The South, Southwest, and western states are reporting the highest levels of flu activity. The CDC recommends that everyone over 6 months old gets an annual flu vaccination, with about 44% of adults getting shots this winter. However, coverage for children is lower than usual.

US health officials also report a decline in COVID-19 vaccination rates, with 23% of adults up to date on their vaccinations as of late January.
