The United States military launched a new wave of air strikes on Yemen overnight, targeting Houthi rebels in the capital city and northern province. The US has extended its bombing campaign against targets in Yemen, which began in mid-March and has killed dozens of people.
Houthi-affiliated media reported that US forces launched 15 raids on Saada province, including the city of Saada and several districts. Mount Nabi Shuaib was also targeted. There were no immediate reports of casualties.
The Houthis have claimed to have downed a US MQ-9 drone over the central province of Marib. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said they used a locally manufactured missile to target the drone.
The US has been conducting its campaign against Yemen after the Houthis threatened to resume attacks on regional shipping, citing Israel’s blockade on aid entering the Gaza Strip. The US has warned Iran that it will continue to target the Houthis until they are no longer a threat to freedom of navigation.
The conflict in Yemen has seen the Houthis launch numerous attacks on merchant vessels and US warships. In recent months, they have targeted over 100 ships, sinking two vessels and killing four sailors. The Houthi rebel group has denied arming itself with Iranian weapons, but the US and Israel claim that Tehran is supplying them.
President Donald Trump has declared Yemen’s Houthi rebels “decimated” by the air strike campaign, saying many of their fighters and leaders have been killed. However, the Houthis remain a significant threat to regional security, and the conflict continues to escalate.
