US chipmaker Intel has fallen behind its competitors globally, with a market capitalization of just $100bn. It once dominated the personal-computer chip market and was briefly the world’s second-most-valuable company in 2000. Today, it supplies few advanced chips used for artificial intelligence. President Donald Trump is considering quasi-nationalisation to revive the industry.
