The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning against the recreational use of nitrous oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas.” Inhaling this odorless and colorless gas can lead to serious side effects, including death. Nitrous oxide is used for legitimate purposes in medicine, industry, and commerce, but misuse can cause severe health issues such as blood clots, loss of consciousness, paralysis, and psychiatric disorders.
The FDA cautioned that its monitoring reports have linked nitrous oxide inhalation to adverse events, and it will take action against those responsible. Britain banned the recreational use of nitrous oxide in 2023 due to concerns over nuisance behavior and health hazards.
Nitrous oxide is widely available in compact cartridges under various brand names. However, the FDA advises consumers to avoid inhaling these products due to the risks involved. The regulator emphasizes that it will investigate reports of adverse events and take necessary measures to prevent misuse.
