Alysa Liu made history by becoming the first U.S. woman to win a figure skating world title in 19 years, claiming gold at the recent championships. The 19-year-old skater won with a total of 222.97 points, surpassing three-time world champion Kaori Sakamoto of Japan.
Liu’s comeback season was marked by her top short program and free skate scores, which earned her the top spot in the competition. She overcame her struggles to land only triple jumps during the program, but still managed to secure the gold medal.
Isabeau Levito, who took fourth place, expressed her gratitude for coming back from a foot injury that kept her off the ice for most of the season. Amber Glenn, who finished fifth, credited her fight and staying calm under pressure as key factors in her improvement.
Liu’s achievement marks a significant milestone for U.S. figure skating, which has not seen an American woman win a world title since 2006. With this victory, Liu joins Kimmie Meissner as the first U.S. women’s singles skater to win a world title since 2006.
