The U.S. flu season has officially begun, with cases surging across the country due to a lack of immunity among some populations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported sharp increases in lab tests, emergency room visits, and other indicators.
Thirteen states have reported high or very high levels of flu-like illness, including Tennessee, where Nashville is experiencing a sickness spike. Louisiana is another early hot spot, with many patients presenting with flu symptoms.
While COVID-19 activity has declined, RSV hospitalizations are rising, posing a risk to infants and the elderly. The CDC noted that no dominant flu strain exists, making it uncertain how effective this year’s vaccine will be.
Last winter’s flu season was considered moderate but long-lasting, resulting in 28,000 flu-related deaths. Experts warn that vaccination rates remain low, with only about 41% of adults and 44% of children vaccinated against the flu as of December 7.
As the holiday season approaches, experts urge everyone to get vaccinated, citing gatherings as opportunities for respiratory viruses to spread widely. With cases on the rise, it’s not too late to take action.
