The latest data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that the country is experiencing a prolonged period of high flu activity, with more than 43,000 hospitalizations reported in the past week. The CDC confirmed 18 pediatric deaths due to influenza, bringing the total for the current season to 86.
Flu test positivity rates have dropped slightly from the previous week, but remain above baseline levels. Outpatient visits decreased, and flu virus tests revealed that nearly all (96%) of reported viruses are type A, with a majority being the 2009 H1N1 strain.
The CDC has stated it will not provide further updates on respiratory disease activity for the remainder of the season. However, some states have experienced high levels of acute respiratory illness, including Delaware, Kansas, New Hampshire, and Ohio, where COVID-19 test positivity rates are comparable to last week’s proportions.
