Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has proposed a ban on synthetic food dyes in various products, including cereals, sausage, oranges, and condiments. The FDA and Department of Health and Human Services have announced plans to roll out the ban, which will affect many common foods.
According to nutrition expert Jessica Ball, while some research suggests that certain food dyes may be detrimental to health, there is limited evidence and often conducted on animals rather than humans. She emphasizes the importance of maintaining a balanced diet, regular physical activity, stress management, quality sleep, and access to healthy foods as key factors for overall well-being.
Under the ban, products such as Froot Loops cereal, Kraft’s Creamy French Dressing, and some types of sausage may undergo color changes due to the removal of synthetic food dyes. However, Ball reassures consumers that many affected products will remain nutritious and safe to eat.
The ban is not expected to have a significant impact on human health, according to experts, as it primarily aims to improve access to healthy foods for all people.
