US food prices have seen a significant increase in recent years due to the Covid-19 pandemic and high inflation. Although prices have leveled off somewhat, new factors are now affecting egg prices and may lead to increases for other staple foods.
A government forecast predicts that egg prices could rise by as much as 20% this year due to avian influenza outbreaks among poultry flocks. The potential imposition of new tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, two major suppliers of US agricultural products, also poses a significant threat to food costs.
However, data suggests that overall food inflation has decreased since its peak during the Covid-19 pandemic. Inflation rates for household staples have stabilized, with prices now closer to historical norms.
