The US General Services Administration (GSA) plans to shut down electric vehicle charging stations at the Denver Federal Center, citing that they are not critical to its work. The move comes as part of the Trump administration’s efforts to cut spending and terminate federal employees.
According to an internal email obtained by CPR News, the GSA has received direction from the current administration to take offline all 22 fully functional charging stations at 11 locations on the campus in Denver’s western suburbs. Some stations will be taken offline within the next week, while others will be shut down once contracts are canceled.
The decision is part of a broader trend under the Trump administration, which has cut federal dollars meant to build electric vehicle chargers across the country, including in Colorado. Local officials worry that the administration’s plans could lead to the closure of the Federal Center itself, with many employees being instructed to return to the office.
The GSA had previously helped other federal agencies procure thousands of electric vehicles and related infrastructure under the Biden administration. However, the website’s fleet electrification webpage is now offline entirely. The move is also linked to Elon Musk, owner of Tesla, who has been leading the Trump administration’s efforts to cut spending across the board.
