A new set of guidelines being drawn up by the federal government in the United States may soon recommend that Americans limit their beer consumption to no more than two drinks per week.
Two researchers, Dr Tim Naimi and Dr Kevin Shields, who contributed to Canada’s 2023 report on limiting alcohol intake to two drinks a day have been advising the US on its new policies. The panel reviewing these guidelines will analyze health effects of drinking alcohol and submit findings to the Interagency Coordination Committee on the Prevention of Underage Drinking.
The new guidelines are expected to be published in 2026, replacing previous recommendations made every five years. The current recommendation calls for men to consume no more than two drinks a day, while women should limit their intake to one drink per day.
Recent studies have shown that consuming alcohol in any amount increases the risk of various health problems, including cancer, heart disease and liver disease. In response, Congress allocated $1.3 million last year to investigate the health effects of drinking.
The researchers behind these new guidelines believe that reducing alcohol consumption can lead to improved health outcomes. However, some critics have raised concerns about the impartiality of the scientific review panel, with three other advisers saying there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
