US household electricity bills have increased by 10% since Donald Trump’s re-entry into the White House, according to a new report. The analysis attributes this increase to Trump’s pro-fossil fuel and anti-renewable energy policies.
The Energy Innovation climate thinktank found that a recent spending bill signed by Trump could lead to a 74% increase in wholesale electricity prices due to its repeal of green energy incentives. A new report from Climate Power, an advocacy group, has confirmed this finding, citing rising household gas prices and datacenter-driven energy demand as contributing factors.
The administration’s deregulatory policies are exacerbating the issue, experts say. Rising temperatures amid the climate crisis also contribute to increased energy costs. Additionally, recent anti-environmental moves threaten to further increase prices, potentially threatening the viability of clean energy developments.
According to Climate Power, 64,000 jobs in renewable energy sectors have been cut or paused since Trump’s election, with $33.87 billion in lost investment. The group says that Republicans are prioritizing donors over cost savings for American families.
“Families are losing jobs while their bills climb, all because Republicans would rather protect their donors than lower costs,” said Climate Power senior adviser Jesse Lee. “This report details just how badly this bill is hurting Americans – and we’re going to make sure they know who to blame when they open higher utility bills this month.”
