A major change is coming to ice cream recipes in the United States. The U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. aims to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes from the nation’s food supply, including ice creams.
In response to this move, a group of 40 ice cream producers, accounting for over 90% of US ice cream sales, has pledged to remove seven synthetic dyes – Red No. 3, Red 40, Green 3, Blue 1, Blue 2, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6 – by the end of 2027.
These dyes will only be removed from ice creams made with dairy milk and sold at grocery stores, convenience stores, and online retailers. However, products made with non-dairy ingredients and small businesses that make their own ice cream will not be included.
The move is part of the Trump administration’s effort to eliminate synthetic dyes from the food supply by the end of 2027. The ban has been linked to potential health issues in children, including neurological problems.
Kennedy stated that removing these dyes would “restore gold-standard science” and “earn back the public’s trust.” Kraft Heinz, a major food company, has also announced its intention to remove all chemical dyes from its products by 2027.
