US Imposes 25% Tariff on Canned Beer Imports Starting Friday

The US has expanded its tariffs on aluminum to include canned beer imports and empty aluminum cans. A 25% tariff will be applied to all imported canned beer and empty aluminum cans starting this Friday, according to a notice from the Department of Commerce.

Industry analysts expect Constellation Brands, which imports most of its beer from Mexico, including Modelo and Corona, to be heavily impacted by the tariffs. The company’s shares have already fallen 22% since Trump’s election in November due to concerns about tariffs.

The US is also one of Canada’s largest customers for aluminum, with China and Mexico being the other main exporters. However, the new tariffs do not affect imported beer packaged in glass bottles. Canned beer has gained market share in recent years due to its lighter weight and cheaper production costs compared to glass bottles.
