US Inflation Rate Hits 2.3 Percent as Egg Prices Soar

A recent surge in egg prices has fueled a nationwide price hike, boosting the overall US inflation rate to 2.3 percent in January, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The index for food rose by 4 percent, primarily driven by a 6.6 percent increase in meat and egg categories.

The country-wide bird flu outbreak is largely behind the rapid price increase. Nationally, egg prices skyrocketed 15 percent from December to January. This trend is also reflected in the metro area of Colorado, where prices for goods and services increased by 2.3 percent compared to a year ago. Gas prices jumped over 10 percent, while medical care, recreation, and apparel costs rose as well. Notably, hotel rates decreased.

The latest inflation data has raised concerns among federal regulators, who have been working to curb price hikes for over two years. Although the current rate is lower than previous periods, it still surpasses central bankers’ preferences.
