US Job Market Focuses on Healthcare, Restaurant Sectors

The US added 139,000 new jobs in May, with employment growth concentrated in two sectors: healthcare and restaurant services. When including March and April’s numbers, the total job gain is 406,000 more workers than in February. However, these gains are largely due to strong demand for health services and individual and family services.

Employment in private education and health services increased by 252,000 in May from February, driven by growth at hospitals and individual and family services. Leisure and hospitality also saw a rise of 122,000 jobs from February, mainly due to growth in food services and drinking places.

Economist Cory Stahle notes that while there are still job opportunities, especially for in-person work like healthcare, the demand for white-collar fields is lower. “Job seekers’ feelings will largely be determined by the type of work they do or seek,” he says. The trend of emerging divides in job opportunities has been seen over the last couple of years.

In contrast to healthcare and restaurant services, employment in financial activities increased slightly, while professional and business services fell.
