According to a recent report by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, unemployment rates for computer science and computer engineering majors aged 22-27 are as high as 6.1% and 7.5%, respectively.
Mishra’s story highlights the challenges faced by many young professionals in the tech industry. Despite graduating with a six-figure salary promise, she has only secured an interview from a fast-food chain, Chipotle. This is not an isolated incident, as many students are finding it difficult to secure jobs due to the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in coding and software engineering.
India’s former Minister of State for the Ministry of Electronics, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, recently advised students to focus less on coding and more on physics and mathematics. He cited Elon Musk and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang as supporting his claim, stating that a deep understanding of core principles will become increasingly important in an age where AI tools are capable of automating many programming tasks.
While the tech industry continues to grapple with this shift, some experts believe that this new focus on physics and mathematics could be beneficial for students. As AI takes over more coding tasks, creative problem-solving, conceptual thinking, and scientific mindset will become essential skills for success in the industry.
