US President Donald Trump vowed to use “overwhelming lethal force” against Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen until they cease their attacks, warning that Tehran would be held accountable for its ally’s actions.
The latest airstrikes were launched on Monday, targeting the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah and Al Jawf governorate north of Sanaa. The Houthis had previously threatened to retaliate after US strikes killed at least 53 people in Yemen over the weekend.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US would not tolerate the Houthis controlling shipping lanes, adding that the attacks would continue until they no longer posed a threat. However, the Houthis have responded with missile strikes and drone attacks on US warships, including the USS Harry S Truman aircraft carrier.
Iran has denied involvement in the Houthi attacks, but the US has accused Tehran of providing military aid to the rebels. The conflict has escalated tensions between the US and Iran, with both sides vowing to retaliate against any further attacks.
The airstrikes mark the first major operation under the second Trump administration, which has sought to counter Iranian influence in the region.
