US President Donald Trump has launched a “decisive and powerful” attack on Houthi militants in Yemen, targeting maritime traffic and American troops in the Red Sea. The operation is seen as an escalation against the group, which is backed by Iran.
The strike resulted in at least 31 deaths and 101 injuries, according to the Reuters news agency. The Houthis have vowed to retaliate and claim that civilians were targeted during the attack.
Trump warned Iran, a major backer of the Houthi militants, that “support for the Houthi terrorists must end immediately” and said that America will hold them accountable. The strike is part of Trump’s two-track strategy towards Iran, which includes increasing economic pressure while also offering new overtures for potential negotiations.
The US has designated the Houthis as a foreign terrorist organization, citing the group’s attacks on US warships and commercial vessels. The attack marks the latest escalation in tensions between the US and Iran-backed militant groups in Yemen.
The operation was carried out by US fighter jets launched from an aircraft carrier in the Red Sea. The US military has helped defend Israel against Iranian attacks amid the ongoing Gaza war, which has killed over 50,000 people mostly Palestinians.
