US Life Expectancy Increases Slightly in 2023

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released its mortality report for 2023, showing a slight increase in life expectancy compared to the previous year. According to the report, life expectancy at birth increased from 77.5 years in 2022 to 78.4 years in 2023.

For men, life expectancy rose by one year, increasing from 74.8 years in 2022 to 75.8 years in 2023. For women, life expectancy also increased, rising 0.9 of a year from 80.2 years in 2022 to 81.1 years in 2023.

The report shows that the age-adjusted death rate decreased by 6% from 798.8 deaths per 100,000 standard population in 2022 to 750.5 in 2023. This decline was seen across all age groups, with a notable decrease in the difference between women’s and men’s life expectancy.

Heart disease remained the top leading cause of death in 2023, followed by cancer and unintentional injuries. However, COVID-19 dropped from the fourth to tenth leading cause in 2023.

The infant mortality rate, which measures the number of infant deaths per 100,000 live births, did not show significant changes between 2022 and 2023. The top causes of infant death accounted for 65.3% of all infant fatalities in the United States.
