US liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies to Europe will continue to increase, according to Chris Wright, the US Energy Secretary. This comes after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 reduced Russian gas exports to Europe.
The US is the world’s largest LNG exporter and has played a key role in meeting European energy demands since then. However, with US President Donald Trump’s recent actions on trade policies, businesses are concerned that relying on US supplies may become vulnerable.
Despite this, Wright expects more US LNG deals with European companies. He stated that there will be “a lot of dialogue about contracts” and that US supply growth will continue in a meaningful way.
Some European executives have suggested importing Russian gas could be a good idea amidst the current turmoil. However, Wright declined to comment on the possibility of increased Russian energy exports to Europe.
Poland has started using seaborne LNG from the US to replace Russian gas. It also receives pipeline gas from Norway via Denmark and the Baltic Sea. The country is planning to receive more US-sourced LNG for Ukraine.
As the European energy market continues to evolve, it’s clear that US LNG supplies will remain an important factor in meeting growing demand.
