The US has acknowledged direct contact with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a rebel group that now controls Syria, according to Secretary of State Antony Blinken. This marks the first time the US has interacted directly with HTS, which is currently designated as a terrorist organization.
Blinken’s announcement came during talks in Jordan with representatives from several Arab countries, Turkey, and Europe to discuss Syria’s future. The discussions focused on supporting a peaceful transition process and establishing an inclusive Syrian government that respects minority rights.
HTS was not present at the meeting, but other foreign ministers expressed concerns about the country’s future, echoing the desire for stability and cohesion. Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein stated that regional powers did not want to see Syria descend into chaos, similar to Libya after Colonel Gaddafi’s removal.
The talks also highlighted the need for cooperation and coordination among regional players to avoid mistakes in the past. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized the importance of preserving existing institutions while reforming them.
Meanwhile, Israel has launched dozens of air strikes against Syria, prompting regional condemnation. The UN Secretary-General expressed concern about the hundreds of airstrikes, which threaten Syria’s stability.
HTS was previously an affiliate of al-Qaeda and has a history of violence. However, its leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, has recently pledged tolerance for different religious groups and communities. The group’s future remains uncertain due to its past actions.
The absence of Syrian representatives at the meeting raised concerns about ensuring the country’s unity and cohesion. The talks also highlighted the need for international cooperation to support a stable Syria, particularly in addressing the impact of external forces on the country’s future.
