US President Donald Trump announced plans to impose significant tariffs on imported furniture in the coming months, citing rising prices and inflation concerns. The move comes as global tariffs imposed earlier this year continue to affect the industry.
Furniture imports from countries like Vietnam, China, Canada, and Mexico have been rising, with over $20 billion worth of consumer furniture imported into the US in the first half of 2025. However, this increase has offset the decline of the domestic furniture-making industry, with North Carolina losing nearly half its jobs due to lower trade barriers with China.
The latest tariff announcement is expected to further accelerate inflation, and shares in some furniture retailers plummeted after Trump’s post on Friday. Wayfair fell almost 8%, while Williams-Sonoma declined almost 7%. However, brands like Ethan Allen and La-Z-Boy saw a rise in stock prices, up 7% and 1.6%, respectively.
The impact of the tariffs will be felt across the industry, with businesses warning they may have to pass on increased costs to consumers. As Trump celebrated the new levies taking effect on dozens of trading partners, he claimed “BILLIONS OF DOLLARS” were now flowing into the US.
