A measles outbreak is growing in the United States, with over 378 cases reported across 18 states as of March. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that most affected areas include Texas’ South Plains and Panhandle regions.
As of now, 95% of diagnosed cases are unvaccinated or unknown. Measles is highly contagious, spreading through the air, and can infect non-immune individuals even two hours after an infected person leaves a room.
The CDC warns that unvaccinated people are at risk, with about one in five hospitalized and up to three in 1,000 children dying from measles. Symptoms appear within seven to 14 days, typically including high fever, cough, runny nose, and watery eyes, followed by a rash three to five days later.
Measles was declared eradicated in the US in 2000 but recent outbreaks have been linked to international travelers and unvaccinated individuals. States currently reporting measles cases include Alaska, California, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, and Washington.
