The US Men’s National Team secured its first gold medal at the IIHF Men’s World Championship since 1933, defeating Switzerland 1-0 in overtime at Avicii Arena. Tage Thompson scored the game-winning goal in the third period of the 3-on-3 overtime frame.
“We beat an excellent team and give full credit to them for their tournament,” said Ryan Warsofsky, head coach of Team USA. “We’re grateful for all the support we received from our fans and everyone who helped make this event possible.”
The US team finished with a record 7-2-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) and outshot Switzerland 39-24 in regulation before winning the game 40-25 in overtime. Goaltender Jeremy Swayman made 25 saves for his first shutout of the tournament.
The goal was set up by a centering feed from Mikey Eyssimont, but Thompson’s shot was initially denied by Swiss netminder Leonardo Genoni. Team USA took several penalty shots and power play chances without scoring before the game went into overtime.
Thompson’s goal came 2:02 into the extra period, as he wristed a shot past Genoni from the top of the right circle. The US team celebrated its first gold medal in over nine decades, ending their drought since 1933.
