US President Donald Trump banned federal agencies from using AI tools from startup Anthropic, but secretly used them in strikes on Iran. The company’s AI system Claude was also used in a military operation that captured Venezuelan President Maduro.
Despite the ban, the US Central Command in the Middle East reportedly used Anthropic’s AI tools for intelligence assessments, target identification, and simulating battle scenarios. This move is seen as a breach of Trump’s orders, which also included giving the Pentagon six months to phase out the technology.
Anthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei rejected the Pentagon’s demands for unrestricted use of its AI technology, saying it would not comply with such requests. The company has now announced plans to challenge the Trump administration’s decision to label it a “supply chain risk” in court.
The move has sparked tensions between Anthropic and the Trump administration, with the President calling the company “left-wing nut jobs”.
