US Mortgage Applications Plummet 10% in Latest Weekly Survey

The US Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) released its latest weekly survey, showing a significant decline in mortgage applications. The current week index fell to 253.5, a drop of 10% from the previous week. The purchase segment also saw a decline, decreasing by 11.8%. Refinance applications fared slightly better, falling by 7.4%.

The average contract basis points per percent rate change for a 30-year mortgage increased by 6.82. This indicates that lenders are passing on higher interest rates to borrowers.

The MBA survey covers over 75% of all US retail residential mortgage applications and has been conducted weekly since 1990. The data provides insight into the state of the housing market, which is closely tied to the overall economy.
