The US National Junior Team opens play in the 2025 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship against Germany at Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa today. The game is set to start at 2:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast live on NHL Network.
Team USA, along with Finland, Canada, Latvia, and Germany, make up Group A, competing in the preliminary round games. The U.S. team has been preparing since December 15 in Plymouth, Michigan, before traveling to Kingston, Ontario, where they played pre-tournament games against Slovakia and Finland.
Head coach David Carle is optimistic about the team’s chances, saying “We have a good group” and that preparations have gone well. The US has won all but one of its 14 previous meetings with Germany in the World Juniors.
The US roster features 10 players from last year’s team, 22 NHL draft picks, including 14 first-round picks. Team captain Ryan Leonard will lead the squad against Germany, with alternate captains Oliver Moore, Danny Nelson, and Gabe Perreault also part of the team. The game is a crucial opening match for the US as they look to make a strong start in the tournament.
