US News Outlet Sues Trump Admin Over Funding Freeze

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, a U.S.-funded news outlet created during the Cold War, is suing Kari Lake and the Trump administration over efforts to defund it. The station claims it hasn’t received $7.5 million in funding due to a freeze ordered by President Donald Trump.

The lawsuit filed in a Washington D.C. federal court says the funding freeze undermines Congress’s control over government grants. Both Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and the U.S. Agency for Global Media, which oversees the outlet, receive government funding with only 1% coming from private donations.

“We urge relief to compel the agency to follow the law,” the lawsuit stated. If funding doesn’t resume, the station will be forced to lay off employees who cover news in 23 European and Asian countries in 27 languages.

The station’s president and CEO, Stephen Capus, said “This is not the time to cede terrain to propaganda and censorship by America’s adversaries.” The lawsuit names Kari Lake, former U.S. Agency for Global Media acting CEO Victor Morales, and other defendants.
