A growing number of high-ranking US officials have resigned or expressed frustration with President Joe Biden’s policy on the Israeli-Gaza conflict, citing concerns over pro-Israel bias and human rights abuses.
Among those to quit are former State Department Deputy Political Counsellor Mike Casey, who cited “dead kids” as a reason for his departure in July. Maryam Hassanein, a special assistant at the Department of Interior, also left her job in July, calling Biden’s foreign policy “genocide-enabling”.
US administration officials have expressed frustration with what they see as a lack of accountability from Washington over Israel’s actions in Gaza.
A former employee of Deutsche Welle, a German media outlet accused of pro-Israel bias, shared internal documents that showed the network had cultivated a culture of fear among journalists covering Israel’s war on Gaza. The allegations include Islamophobic and dehumanising remarks about Palestinians and protesters.
The conflict has also sparked concern over access to clean water in Gaza, where millions are struggling to survive due to Israeli attacks. Al Jazeera reports that many residents have to rely on “less than five litres of water” a day for basic needs.
Meanwhile, the Houthi group in Yemen has declared readiness to engage in a long war with Israel in support of the Palestinians in Gaza. Two Palestinians were killed and several wounded in an Israeli strike on the Sabra neighbourhood in south Gaza City.
As tensions escalate, the international community continues to push for accountability from Israel over its actions in Gaza, including the UN General Assembly’s vote to ask the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for an opinion on Israel’s obligation to facilitate aid to Palestinians.
