US Port Fee Plan May Backfire on Asian Allies

The US has introduced a port fee plan aimed at hindering China’s dominance in global shipbuilding. However, South Korea and Japan, its major East Asian allies, may struggle to compensate for any potential shortfall in production.

Analysts note that it is too early to assess the plan’s impact on the market. Nevertheless, the US’ proposal could benefit these countries due to their existing expertise in shipbuilding. According to Han Ning, general manager of Shipbid, outsourcing vessel orders to South Korea and Japan may be more practical than establishing domestic shipyards in the US.

The US is seeking to strengthen its partnerships with trusted allies, inviting them to invest in domestic shipyards and participate in military craft maintenance.
