US President Joe Biden described the collapse of the Assad regime in Syria as a “historic opportunity” and “moment of risk,” while outlining a plan for US support during the transition period.
Biden announced that the US has conducted dozens of airstrikes in Syria, targeting ISIS, and vowed to work with partners and stakeholders in Syria to help manage the situation. He also pledged to engage with Syrian groups and opposition forces, as well as protect US personnel in the region.
The president emphasized his commitment to preventing the resurgence of ISIS, stating that the US will “not let” the group reconstitute and take advantage of the current situation in Syria. Biden also warned that the US will remain vigilant and closely watch the actions of rebel groups, including those designated as terrorist organizations.
Biden’s comments come amid a shift in US policy on the conflict, with President-elect Donald Trump urging a hands-off approach. However, the White House has maintained its commitment to supporting the Syrian people and promoting a peaceful transition of power.
The US is prioritizing efforts to secure detention facilities for ISIS fighters and destroy chemical weapons remaining in the country. Biden also reiterated his commitment to bringing home freelance journalist Austin Tice, who has been held in Syria since 2012.
As the Assad regime’s collapse marks a new chapter in the region, the international community is watching closely to ensure that human rights are protected and accountability is maintained.
