US President Donald Trump has stated that it will likely be known within 24 hours whether the Palestinian militant group Hamas has agreed to accept a proposed ceasefire deal with Israel.
The proposal, dubbed “final,” was offered by Trump as part of an effort to broker a ceasefire between the two sides. Israel had accepted the necessary conditions for finalizing a 60-day truce, during which both parties will work towards ending the war in Gaza.
However, Hamas has expressed concerns about the agreement, seeking guarantees that it will lead to Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza. Details of these guarantees are still being worked out by Israeli officials.
The latest escalation in the decades-old conflict began when Hamas launched an attack on Israel in October 2023, killing over 1,200 people and taking around 250 hostages. Since then, Israel has carried out military operations that have killed over 56,000 Palestinians, prompting accusations of genocide and war crimes at international courts.
Trump also mentioned the Abraham Accords during his comments, stating that he expects more countries to join the agreement, which aims to normalize ties between Israel and Gulf nations.
