US President Donald Trump appears to have scaled back his plan to take control of war-torn Gaza and relocate its more than two million residents to nearby countries. In a recent interview, Trump stated that he was merely recommending the idea, as leaders from Jordan and Egypt had rejected it.
Trump’s initial proposal involved Washington taking over the territory, rebuilding it, and pressuring Egypt and Jordan to accept displaced Palestinians. However, after receiving pushback, the president now says he will not force the issue. Instead, he plans to sit back and offer his recommendation.
The news comes as Arab leaders met in Riyadh on Friday to create a proposal for Gaza’s post-war reconstruction, potentially countering Trump’s plan. The US is reportedly providing billions of dollars in aid to Egypt and Jordan each year, which may have influenced their decision against the relocation proposal.
