US Regulator Fires 76 Probationary Employees Amid Staff Cuts

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) has informed 76 probationary employees that they will be leaving their jobs on March 8, according to an email seen by Reuters. The move is part of a broader effort to cut federal workers, following similar actions by other agencies.

The OCC had reported 3,630 full-time employees in 2024, with the majority being probationary staff who have typically been in their roles for one or two years. These employees enjoy fewer protections than longer-term workers and are often among those let go during mass layoffs.

This move is not an isolated incident, as other federal agencies have also fired dozens of probationary employees in recent weeks. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) recently informed over 100 staff members they would be losing their jobs, while the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) earlier this month let go dozens of similar workers as part of a sweeping workforce reduction effort.

The trend highlights the growing trend of federal agencies cutting staff to reduce costs and streamline operations.
