The United States has taken steps towards re-establishing diplomatic relations with the new Syrian government. A US flag was raised outside the former ambassador’s residence in Damascus on Thursday, marking a significant development in Washington’s ties with the country.
US Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack visited Damascus to inaugurate the residence and meet with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa. During his visit, Barrack attended the signing of an agreement between Qatari, Turkish, and US companies for the development of a major energy project.
The consortium, led by Qatar’s UCC Concession Investments, will develop four combined-cycle gas turbines and a 1,000-megawatt solar power plant. The projects are expected to supply over 50% of Syria’s electricity needs once completed.
Despite initial wariness about the new Syrian government, the US has shown increasing openness in recent weeks. President Trump recently held a surprise meeting with al-Sharaa and began rolling back decades of sanctions on Syria.
US Ambassador Barrack praised the decision to lift sanctions as “bold” with no conditions or requirements. The US State Department announced Barrack’s appointment as special envoy to Syria, citing his ability to work towards stopping radicalism, improving relations, and securing peace in the Middle East.
