The Pentagon has repatriated Ridah Bin Saleh al Yazidi, a Tunisian detainee who was held at the Guantanamo Bay prison since its opening in 2002. The transfer marks the fourth in two weeks as part of a push by the Biden administration to reduce the number of detainees at the facility.
Al Yazidi, 59, spent over a decade at the prison without being charged or convicted of any war crimes. His case was initially approved for transfer more than a decade ago but was delayed due to Tunisian government’s refusal to accept him. The Pentagon did not provide details on security arrangements surrounding his return.
The prisoner’s departure left 26 detainees, with 14 others approved for transfer to other countries. However, the White House will once again miss its goal of closing the prison, which is now focused on military trials rather than prisoner-of-war-style operations.
