The US has imposed new rules banning the use of Huawei’s Ascend advanced computer chips worldwide. China strongly condemned the move, saying it was “not conducive to long-term cooperation” and urged the US to correct its “erroneous practices”. The ban affects Huawei’s efforts to build its own leading-edge technologies, including its artificial intelligence project DeepSeek.
The US Commerce Department said the Ascend semiconductors used in China’s DeepSeek AI effort may be developed or produced in violation of US export controls. This move is part of a larger trade tensions between the two nations. Despite a recent truce, frictions remain over tariffs and other issues.
China had previously lifted retaliatory measures imposed after President Donald Trump raised tariffs on Chinese products to 145%. However, Beijing continues to impose its own tariffs on US products, including a 10% levy during the 90-day negotiating period. The dispute highlights ongoing tensions between the world’s two largest economies.
