US Sees First Severe Bird Flu Case as Virus Spreads Across Country

Health officials confirmed the first severe case of bird flu in the US last week, causing a spike in online searches for symptoms of the virus. Over 60 people have been infected with mild illness since March, but one case has resulted in critical condition.

Google searches for bird flu symptoms increased by 500% on Wednesday, with fever and respiratory symptoms being reported. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advise anyone who may have been exposed to bird flu to contact their local health department or community clinic immediately.

The US has seen mild cases of bird flu among animals, but a severe case was documented in Louisiana involving a person over 65 with underlying medical problems who had contact with sick birds. The individual is currently hospitalized with severe respiratory symptoms.

Despite no reported person-to-person spread, the CDC warns that the risk to public health remains low. However, government officials are working to minimize the agricultural impact of the virus. California has declared a state of emergency after detecting cases in dairy cows on Southern California farms.

Raw milk from infected cattle was recalled last month, and two cats in Los Angeles County have died from bird flu infections after consuming it. Flu experts say precautions should be taken when handling poultry or sick birds, including wearing protective gear.
