US Sees High COVID-19 Levels in 20 States Ahead of Christmas

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that COVID-19 levels are high or very high in 20 states, according to recent wastewater analysis. This data provides an earlier indication of infection levels than relying on positive tests alone.

As of December 19, five states – Kansas, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Mexico, and South Dakota – reported “very high” levels of SARS-CoV-2, while 15 states and the District of Columbia reported “high” levels. The remaining 10 states had “moderate” levels, with only six having “low” or “minimal” levels.

The CDC’s wastewater analysis also reveals COVID-19 variants in circulation. KP.3 and KP.3.1.1 strains are declining, while XEC has become more prevalent at 29%. The JN.1 strain remains at 7%, and miscellaneous variants now account for 21% of reported cases.

This data can serve as an early warning system for communities, helping to track changes in infection rates.
