The US is experiencing an increase in pertussis cases, with over 10,000 confirmed and probable cases reported between January and March 2025. The country has seen a significant rise in cases compared to previous years. In contrast, the number of pertussis cases in the US decreased from 72,328 in 2012 to 7,063 in 2023.
The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) is urging countries to boost vaccination rates and enhance surveillance systems to combat the growing outbreak. The PAHO/WHO emphasizes that timely identification of unvaccinated or under-vaccinated populations is crucial to prevent outbreaks.
Pertussis vaccines, which are combined with other antigens like diphtheria and tetanus, can be administered after six weeks of age. Three doses are required in the primary series, followed by booster shots to maintain immunity.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers pertussis vaccines at pharmacies nationwide. To stay up-to-date on the latest outbreak information, visit the PAHO/WHO’s country-by-country summary webpage.
